Mohammed Shami has proved time and again that he is one of the key bowlers for Team India in all formats of the game. Recently, the veteran fast bowler registered a five-wicket haul against Australia in the first ODI of the ongoing three-match series and ended the game as the Player of the Match.

However, even though Shami has performed exceedingly well for the Indian cricket team, he has often been given the role of a rotational bowler. With Shardul Thakur having the upper hand due to his all-round abilities, Shami was often overlooked by the Indian pace attack consisting of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. In particular, in recent times, the 33-year-old has not been a regular fixture in the Indian team as he alternates with other pacers.

Talking about bowling more time in the heat after the series opener on Friday, Shami said it depends on the captain and the game situation. Asked about bowling with other pacers, he said, "We've played together for a long time, so we know what needs to be done. Always enjoy when we bowl well in tandem like this.”

Mohammad Shami opens up on being benched

Shami was benched for most of the matches in the 2023 Asia Cup as Bumrah and Siraj were chosen as the main choices. However, the right-arm pacer is not disappointed by it, rather he recognises the team's need.

“This is a part and parcel of the game. It's important to understand the team's needs. It isn't possible that you'll always be part of the playing XI and team combinations. When we play regularly, someone or the other will have to sit out. There is no point being frustrated about it. Obviously, it's good if you're in the XI but it's also crucial to be understanding when on the bench. That role is also very important,” said Shami.

"The idea from the team management is to rotate according to the conditions and the situation, or depending on the opposition. They know how to handle it and if you see, the recent results have been quite good. The rotation is going smoothly and before the World Cup, I don't think anyone should be burdened a lot," he added.
