A hashtag demanding Virat Kohli’s arrest has been trending on Twitter since the morning of October 15, Saturday, leaving cricket fans puzzled. However, if one gets deeper, it can be understood that it is linked to a murder case in Tamil Nadu, India.
On Thursday, a person named S Dharmaraj was arrested in the Ariyalur district of the state for killing his friend P Vignesh over a debate on choosing the best between Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The local cops said that the duo had a drunken brawl when deciding the better batter among the two.
“Both had consumed liquor. As per the initial investigation, Vignesh was supporting the Mumbai franchise in Indian T20 League while Dharmaraj was a Bangalore franchise supporter,” the local cops from Keelapalur were quoted as saying by News18.
Further, the cops clarified that the offender was a stammerer and used to get body shamed by Vignesh often. The officials added that the victim compared the Bangalore franchise’s struggling performances to stammering which enraged Dhamaraj who, in turn, murdered his friend with a cricket bat.
“During the course of their debate, Vignesh had allegedly mocked the Bangalore team and Virat Kohli. Vignesh had the habit of body shaming Dharmaraj, who was a stammerer. On that day he had made some remarks comparing the Bangalore team to the speaking difficulty of Dharmaraj. This infuriated Dharmaraj who attacked Vignesh with a bottle and later hit him with a cricket bat on the head. Dharmaraj soon fled the spot,” the officials clarified further on the incident.
The never-ending debate of ‘Rohit or Virat’ in India
Cricket is a sport that is widely followed all around the world, largely in India. Fans idolize players and end up having a verbal war on social media and Twitter in specific. Negative hashtags targeting a particular player are not something new and there have been many such fan wars in the past.
However, this incident has shocked the cricketing world and many opined that the fans must consider cricketers as humans and not idolize them. Rohit’s fans, who were agitated and frustrated by the incident, started slamming Kohli’s fans and requested them to change their way of thinking.
Following the incident, they started coming up with the ‘#ArrestKohli’ hashtag on Twitter on Saturday morning blaming all of his fans out there. We decided to hand-pick a few such tweets from Twitter and put them out here.
Here are the tweets:
