It was Manchester United's worst day at Anfield, suffering an embarrassing and historic 7-0 defeat at their arch-rivals Liverpool on Saturday. The Reds demolished their opponents in the Premier League and boosted their Champions League qualification hopes with an utterly dominant performance. After conceding a goal in the first half, Erik ten Hag's side lost their way in the second half when Liverpool hit the net six times.
Jürgen Klopp's men took the lead through Cody Gakpo in the first half and then blew away Harry Maguire and Co in the second half. Mohamed Salah became Liverpool's leading goalscorer in the Premier League with two goals, while Gakpo and Darwin Núñez also scored twice each. Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino, who recently expressed intentions of leaving Liverpool in the summer, completed the scoring from close range in the 88th minute.
'That is not Manchester United': Erik ten Hag
Speaking after the game, United manager Erik ten Hag admitted his side had played very professionally and had 'lost their heads'. He said: "I was surprised because I have seen the last weeks and months our winning attitude. The second half we had no attitude at all. We didn’t stick to plan, and we lost our heads. Very unprofessional - that is not Manchester United."
Hag further said the way his team conceded goals was "really annoying" and he was surprised to see those mistakes from his men.
“The first two goals were defensive transition moments, the first was a turnover and the second was a counter, bad decisions and decisions on the ball. How we conceded the goals is really annoying. The third was a counter with unprofessional decisions – not following in, and then running in, moving forwards, giving space away in midfield, not tracking back.
“So then it is 3-0 and the game is lost, but as a team you have to stick together. That is what we didn’t do. It is a surprise for me, I didn’t see this from my team. I don’t think it is us. I don’t think it is Manchester United. It was really bad, really poor," he added.
