Rohit Sharma-led Indian team have not been able to emulate their very best in the Super 4 round of the Asia Cup 2022. The Indian brigade lost the first match of the Super 4 against Pakistan and then went to lose against Sri Lanka. The Indian skipper, in the post-match press conference, said that he would take the loss in his stride and look forward to the 20-20 World Cup 2022.
But if one looks at the matches and points out the faults, India has something beyond basics to work on. The Indian skipper admitted to experimenting and said that the team is 95% set for the World Cup. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong; it looks like it from the outside, but we don’t look at it that way,” the skipper said.
“I’ve been at many press conferences and when you lose such questions will be asked. It’s normal. But as far as the team is concerned, you can go in and see (in the dressing room), all the boys are relaxed, chilled. We need to have such an atmosphere whether you win or lose,” he said further.
This drew a lot of backlash from fans, who expected a mature reply from the captain. The Mumbai batter’s opinion on Team India’s defeat put a question on fans’ minds if the captain is taking losses lightly. He further clarified why Dinesh Karthik was left out of the playing XI against Sri Lanka.
“See, it is simple. We wanted a left-hander to bat in the middle. That’s why Karthik is out. Not because of form or anything. We wanted a left-hand batter in the middle to take pressure off, but it didn’t happen. But by no means has DK been dropped because of poor form,” he said.
We always want to have flexibility in the group: Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma did not shy away from admitting the flexibility that the team possesses. He agreed on changing players according to conditions and enlightened the fans on the same.
“We always want to have flexibility in the group. We will keep changing players every now and then depending on the opposition. Four-five batters will play, but there will always be those one-two changes in the batting,” he said.
Rohit Sharma said that the team would try a lot of players until the 20-20 World Cup 2022. Even then, he admitted that the team for the 20-20 World Cup would somewhat be similar.
“Yes, there are a lot of questions we need to answer, and along the way in the three-four series we’ve played, we have found some answers,” he said and added, “after this, we have two more series and then the World Cup. Till our squad is announced, we can try out a few players.”
