Ruturaj Gaikwad, not chosen for the West Indies T20I team, will captain India in the 2023 Asian Games. The Indian Cricket Board revealed the selection of 15 players for the multi-nation event on Friday night, with the Chennai Super Kings opener leading the young group.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma, who received their maiden national call-up for the five-match T20I series against West Indies, have also been selected for the forthcoming event. While Shivam Dube, Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar returned to the T20I setup, IPL 2023 stars Rinku Singh and Prabhsimran Singh took their deserving place.

This is the first time that the Indian men's cricket team is participating in the Asian Games. The T20 tournament will be held from September 28 to October 8 at Zhejiang University of Technology Pingfeng Cricket Field, China.

"The Men’s Selection Committee has picked India’s squad for the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 to be held from 19th September to 8th October 2023 at Zhejiang University of Technology Pingfeng Cricket Field. The men’s cricket competition will take place from 28th September to 8th October in a T20 format," the board said in an official statement.

A milestone in Gaikwad's career, but what about Shikhar Dhawan?

Shikhar Dhawan's international career seems to be ending as the Indian Cricket Board focuses on building a young team for the future. While Deepak Hooda and Venkatesh Iyer were expected to be added to the squad, they were listed as standby players with Yash Thakur and Sai Sudarshan.

India Squad for Asian Games: Ruturaj Gaikwad (Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rahul Tripathi, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Shivam Mavi, Shivam Dube, Prabhsimran Singh (wk)

Standby list of players: Yash Thakur, Sai Kishore, Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Sai Sudarshan.
