The first Test match between India and Bangladesh had a riveting first day’s play as the day ended even stevens after 90 overs were bowled. India ended the day at 278-6. They got to this position largely due to contributions from Cheteshwar Pujara, who made a rock solid 90 off 203 balls, with 11 fours. Rishabh Pant struck a counter-attacking 46 off 45, with six fours and two sixes.

Shreyas Iyer continued his rich vein of form in Test cricket as he played priceless innings of 82 off 169 balls, with 10 fours. Bangladesh took the first session in the morning as they had India 48-3. Taijul Islam was Bangladesh’s best bowler as he picked up 3-84 in 30 overs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up 2-71 in his 18-over spell.

Iyer survived a lucky scare when he was on 78

Iyer played a wonderful innings under pressure and put the pressure back on Bangladesh but he had a slice of luck when he was on 77. Ebadot Hossain bowled one that came back into Iyer, he got struck in the crease and got into a tangle. Iyer got a bottom edge on the ball which brushed the stumps as the ball went to Nurul Hasan. But to the dismay of the Bangladesh players, the bails did not come off and  Iyer was extremely lucky on that occasion.

India are playing Test cricket after a long gap since they last played the rescheduled Fifth Test against England. The Indian top order again got into a tangle as Shubman Gill was dismissed after making 20 off 40 balls, with three fours. KL Rahul chopped one back onto the stumps after he made 22 off 54 balls, with three fours.

Virat Kohli got a ripper from Taijul Islam as he departed for just 1 off 5 balls. Kohli looked circumspect against the spinner and he did not have a proper plan on how to tackle him. India were 48-3 before Pujara and Pant came and turned the tide for them with a timely partnership.
