South Africa and Netherlands squared off at the Adelaide Oval where it was a match that they had to win to keep their qualification hopes alive. South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl.

In the first innings, Netherlands were helped with contributions from Stephan Myburgh and Max O Dowd who scored a stoke-filled 37 off 30 balls with seven fours and 29 off 31 balls with one four and one six respectively. When they were dismissed, Top Copper provided a quickfire 35 off 19 balls with two fours and two sixes.

The hero for Netherlands with the bat was Colin Akermann who scored a superb 41 off just 26 balls with three fours and two sixes. Scott Edwards also chipped in with a vital 12 off 7 balls with two fours to help Netherlands score 158-4 in their 20 overs.

In the second innings, South Africa lost their way right from the first ball as Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma were dismissed with the score at 39. Then no one else could get going as they all could not convert their starts. When the score was 90-4 it could have been anyone’s game.

The game-changing movement of the match happened when David Miller was dismissed caught by Roelof van der Merve off the bowling of Brendon Glover. The ball was a short delivery and there was extra bounce. Miller looked to pull and got a top edge. Merve was running backwards, looked over his shoulder, and caught the ball with a full-length dive to the left. He also looked in full control when he slid in the end as well.

The catch changed the complexion of the game as South Africa capitulated and could not get the runs and finish a target of 158 and could end up only on 145-8 in their 20 overs. Brendon Glover was the pick of the Netherlands bowlers as he picked up 3-9 in his two-over spell.

This was a wonderful moment for Merve as he pulled a rabbit out of the hat against his former team South Africa. He was a former South African player before he changed bases and played for the Netherlands.
