The 18th match of the 20-20 World Cup between South Africa and Zimbabwe ended in bizarre fashion as the rain played spoilsport with South Africa needing just 13 runs to win having 10 wickets in hand. The match eventually ended in a washout as South Africa went home with just one point to their name instead of a much-deserved two. However, an incident from the first innings of the game has been going viral where Quinton De Kock’s mistake led to South Africa being penalised for five runs.

The incident took place on the third ball of the final over of the last over of Zimbabwe’s innings. A relay from Lungi Ngidi hit Quinton de Kock's gloves, which was placed on the field by the keeper in hopes of gathering the ball for a quick throw. Not only the Proteas were penalized by five runs, but it was deemed a dead ball as well, handing the Zimbabweans an extra delivery in the final over. But they could not make it count, as Shumba was dismissed on the final ball of the first innings.

According to the rule by the MCC, "the umpire shall award five penalty runs to the batting side. The penalty for a No ball or a Wide shall stand. Additionally, runs completed by the batsmen shall be credited to the batting side, together with the run in progress if the batsmen had already crossed at the instant of the offence."

"Inform the other umpire and the captain of the fielding side of the reason for this action. Inform the batsmen and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of what has occurred."

Zimbabwe finished their innings on the score of 79/5 after nine overs. Wesley Madhevere starred with the bat scoring 35 off just 18 balls. South Africa further gave 15 extras in their nine overs which helped Zimbabwe get to 79.

South Africa’s chase got off to an explosive start with Quinton De Kock determined to finish the target as quickly as possible. However, after several rain delays during the chase, the game was finally called a washed out with South Africa just 13 runs away from win having all 10 wickets in hand.

The game ended in disappointment for the Proteas team as they had to share the points with Zimbabwe.
