Delhi Capitals' (DC) hopes of entering the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs were almost dashed by a 27-run demolition of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chepauk Stadium on Wednesday (May 10). Batting first, CSK's top-order failed to resist much time on the crease, and it was Jadeja and MS Dhoni's magnificent cameo in the dying overs that gave them a respectable total in the first innings.

The CSK skipper came out to bat when Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Ambati Rayudu in the third ball of the 17th over. Dhoni got off the mark with a single in the same over, but he did not get to bat in the following over as Ravindra Jadeja faced all six balls from Kuldeep Yadav. CSK were at 139-6 with two overs remaining, and anything below 160 would have been a challenge for the bowlers to defend.

Khaleel came in to bowl his final over, and Dhoni smoked a six to deep mid-wicket in the third ball of the 19th over. The crowd went insane after receiving what they had been waiting for, and the entire Chepauk echoed "Dhoni...Dhoni" screams. However, the camera person was alert and quickly shifted the focus towards Dhoni's wife Sakshi and daughter Ziva, who were in the stands. The two were seen clapping and relishing the moment as they cheered for Dhoni and his team.

The 41-year-old didn't stop after that six, hitting a four off the very next delivery and another maximum in the final ball of the penultimate over to gain a crucial 19 runs for the team. With the scoreboard reading 126-6 in 16.2 overs, the target CSK could have been aiming for was 150. However, Jadeja’s 16-ball 21 and Dhoni’s quick-fire 9-ball 20 took their total to 167.

Defending a modest total, CSK pacer Deepak Chahar drew first blood by dismissing captain David Warner on the second ball of the first over. The visitors lost three wickets inside the powerplay and were nowhere in the chase after that. Manish Pandey and Rilee Rossouw put on a 59-run fourth-wicket stand, but it didn't help the team because it came at a run-a-ball. The CSK bowlers were well in the business to restrict their opponents to 140-8 and dent their hopes of entering the IPL 2023 playoffs.
