England white-ball captain Jos Buttler played a breathtaking innings in The Hundred before the rain intervened on Saturday, August 6 at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester. The Manchester Originals opener hit five huge sixes and three fours in their match against London Spirit. Butler set the stage for a high-scoring thriller, but rain had the final say and both teams shared a point each.

Batting first, the Originals got off to a flying start with Buttler and Phillip Salt coming out all guns blazing. The duo made 44 runs partnership in 24 balls before Salt got dismissed for 21 off 9 balls. The momentum was carried forward by Max Holden, who stitched a 50-plus partnership with Buttler for the second wicket. However, Holden was out for 24 off 16 on the 55th ball, and they then lost two more wickets in a short period.

It's a shame we couldn't get a full game: Buttler

Buttler's blistering knock came to an end on the 65th ball, when Ravi Bopara bowled him out with a slower knuckle ball delivery. But his 36-ball 62 propelled Originals to a competitive score of 135-5 in 80 balls before rain intervened and wiped away the entire game. The right-handed batter brought up his fifty in just 29 balls with back-to-back sixes off leg-spinner Matt Critchley.

"It's a shame we couldn't get a full game in but, personally, it was a good day for me. There was a lot of energy left in the changing room - the guys were desperate to get out there and play, but it is what it is and fingers crossed that it won't affect too much more of the competition," Buttler said after the match was called off.

Buttler also created history in England's T20 cricket with his scintillating performance against Spirit on Saturday. He is currently the English batter with the most T20 sixes (441 from 376 matches), surpassing Alex Hales, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket. The 32-year-old is now 11th on the overall list. Given his present form, it would not be surprising if he complete 500 maximums in a hurry.
