India's women's Hockey team captain, Savita Punia played the role of the savior during India's bronze medal match against New Zealand at the CWG 2022. The goalkeeper's heroics clinched India's first medal in the event after a long gap of 16 years.
The score was tied after regulation time which meant that the match would go to a penalty shootout. After the Kiwis took the lead and India missed their first attempt, skipper Punia took it upon herself to prevent her opponents from scoring.

After stopping New Zealand's fifth attempt, India won the bronze medal by defeating their opponent 2-1 in the penalty shootout. The players celebrated the victory by embracing each other.

India then went on to win their second group stage match against Wales by 3-1. India lost 3-1 to England in their third group stage game on August 2 before defeating Canada 3-2 in their fourth and final pool match to qualify for the semi-final. India lost to Australia on penalties in the semifinal, which knocked them out of the gold medal race.
The women's team has shown that the spark for Hockey still exists and it will not fade away so easily. These wins prove that India will regain its lost glory in Hockey and it will rise like the flaming phoenix and reign supreme in hockey again.
