Pakistan are playing their first warm-up match of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 against England at The Gabba Stadium in Brisbane. Both the openers, Babar Azam and M Rizwan have been rested for the match as Shan Masood and Haiders Ali were given the opportunity to open the innings for the team.

The duo started the innings brilliantly as they added 49 runs for the opening wicket. Shan Masood was the aggressor of the two as he smashed 39 balls in just 22 balls, including 7 fours. Pakistan were going pretty well till the time both were out there at the crease. However, the departure of Masood turned things around for England. David Willey took two wickets in two consecutive deliveries in the 11th over to suddenly leave Pakistan in a spot of bother at 94 for 4.

Iftikhar Ahmed, who was looking good for his 22 off 18 balls, had the responsibility to carry the team to a good score. However, what followed was a big mix-up as Asif Ali sold Iftikhar Ahmed down the river. After nudging the ball on the on-side, Ali takes a couple of steps down to go for a single but backed out. However, till that time, Iftikhar Ahmed had already reached other end of the pitch and it was impossible to get back to the non-striker’s end in time.

Asif Ali too got out for 14 off 12 later in the 18th over as Pakistan didn’t get the finish that they were looking for. But, still they managed to reach a pretty good score of 160 at the end of 20 overs, thanks to the intent shown in the first half. At the time of writing, England are 2 for no loss at the end of the first over. Philip Salt and Alex Hales are opening for England.

Pakistan will kickstart their 20-20 World Cup campaign against India on 23rd October 2022.
