San Francisco Unicorns (SFU) made a strong start to their second innings in an attempt to claim their second win in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023. However, the Seattle Orcas (SOR) bowlers tightened the screws from the second half of the innings and took wickets at regular intervals to clinch a 35-run win at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on Sunday (July 15).

SOR won the toss and elected to bat first and posted a respectable score of 177-4 in 20 overs. In reply, SFU openers Finn Allen and Matthew got off to a flying start, but the partnership ended abruptly in the 3.2 overs as the former was run out in a bizarre fashion.

The New Zealand batter tried to take a single after pushing the ball to square leg. In fact, he was running a bit lazy, thinking that the fielder would not throw quickly. However, Shehan Jayasuriya, the fielder, was alert and picked up the ball and threw it to the non-striker's end. Allen was far away from the crease and tried to stretch forward, but his bat got stuck in the pitch and slipped out of his hands when the bails dislodged.

Here's the video of Finn Allen's bizarre runout:

Finn Allen's wicket shifted the momentum in SOR's favour

Allen was on fire from the start, scoring 28 off just 9 balls before being dismissed in Cameron Gannon's over. His short but impactful innings consisted of 4 fours and two sixes. Veteran pacer Wayne Parnell really felt the heat from his bat as the 24-year-old smashed 22 runs in his one over, which included a hat-trick four.

Wade was also going all guns blazing at the other end, but his partner's exit shifted the momentum in SOR's favour. The Australian wicket-keeper batter was out in the following over over Allen's wicket, having scored 28 from 16 balls. Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan tried to find some runs in the middle overs but he did not get good support from the other end. Gannon took four wickets, three of them in the final over, ending SFU's innings in the 18th over.
