The 2022-23 Big Bash League edition in Australia has officially begun and the first encounter took place between Sydney Thunder and the Melbourne Stars who have been the unluckiest franchise in the history of the BBL. The match took place in Canberra at the Manuka Oval.
Melbourne won the toss and chose to bowl. There was not much to write about with the bat for Melbourne as they capitulated to just 122-8 in their 20 overs. Trent Boult picked up 2-21 in his four overs. Nathan Coulter Nile picked up 3-19 in his four overs. Beau Webster and Adam Zampa also picked up 2 wickets each in their four over spells. In what was a low scoring thriller Sydney got home in the end by 1 wicket off the last ball. Gurinder Sandhu scored a vital 20 off 16 balls with two fours and 1 six. Melbourne tried hard but, in the end, could not win the low-scoring thriller.

Sydney win the match off the last ball
Melbourne had their moment of brilliance in the second innings with a superb catch. Boult was bowling to Mathew Gikes and Brody Couch took a superb catch. It was a full inswinger from Trent Boult. Gikes played the flick shot but it was not along the ground, and it took the inside half of the bat and went to the right of the short third man. Couch initially palms the ball up in the air, then he dives and kicks the ball with his left leg onto his chest, then it fumbles off his palm and then he somehow manages to take it with his hands.
He got the catch after five attempts which was a big thing in itself. Sydney have got off the mark with two points and have started their BBL campaign on a high but Melbourne have lost their first encounter. This match was full of ebbs and flows till the end. It was a low-scoring thriller in bowling-friendly conditions with the batters having to work hard for their runs. The fans in Australia will be hoping for some high-scoring encounters going forward after this low-scoring encounter.
