India won the first ODI against West Indies by just three runs. Mohammed Siraj had to defend 15 runs off the last over and did it successfully. Earlier, Dhawan set the tone for Team India by scoring 97 runs. The batter missed his century by just three runs. The Indian team put a score of 308 after losing 7 wickets in the first innings. Chasing a target of 309, West Indies batted quite bravely.

West Indies put up a great fight against India and Kyle Mayers top scored for the Caribbean with 75 runs. Shamarh Brooks scored 46 and Brandon King scored 54 runs. An unbeaten 53 runs partnership for the 7th wicket took West Indies close to the winning mark. With 5 runs needed off the last ball, Siraj held his nerve and took India home.

They came close to winning the match. And it was well appreciated by their white-ball captain Nicholas Pooran. Gill and Shreyas both managed to score half-centuries for the team. Post the match, Indian cricket board uploaded a video where Brian Lara can be seen interacting with Indian players in the Indian dressing room. The former West Indian great can be seen interacting with Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Lara was seen conversing with Yuzvendra Chahal. The Indian skipper for the series joined the conversation. And they were followed by Shreyas Iyer. Dhawan expressed his disappointment for missing out on his hundred in the post-match presentation. Dhawan also appreciated Siraj and the bowlers for defending the total. He said that he would like to continue the momentum. And added that the team wanted to win the series.

India will play the second ODI against West Indies on 24th July at the same venue. And the last match will be played on July 27 at the same venue as well. Following the ODI series, India will play five-match T20I series. And Indian captain Rohit Sharma will return for the series. India would look to win the ODI series and T20I series as well.
