Australia dominate first innings
Concerning the match, the Australian batters dominated the first innings after being forced to bat first by Ireland skipper Andrew Balbirnie. Despite losing David Warner early up in the innings, the Australian skipper Aaron Finch, who looked in fine nick on the day, stayed almost till the end to help the Kangaroos put on a competitive total of 179 runs on the board.
Scoring 63 runs off 44 balls, Finch returned to the pavilion in the 17 over, putting the team in a strong position. However, it was Marcus Stoinis and Tim David who put on a power-hitting show, in the end, to help Australia put on the huge total.
Mitchell Marsh, who contributed 28 runs with the bat, said after the first innings that the team was happy with the total and added that the team would hope to defend the total. Further, the right-handed batter said that the Australian captain sustained a minor hamstring and clarified that it was not serious.
“We have done very well there. 180 is probably par, it is not your standard Gabba wicket and I thought it was a touch on the slower side, now we have to bowl well. Not too bad, bit of a slow start, felt like I was getting my rhythm and unfortunately nicked the cut shot. He (Finch) probably did a minor hammy, not really sure, I haven't been down there, but he's ready to field so it is not too bad,” said Marsh after the first innings.
