The intense battles between players on the field can sometimes transfer over to their fans in the stands. However, incidents in which spectators enter the pitch and create chaos cannot be encouraged and are detrimental to any sport. Similar scenes unfolded at the RCDE stadium in Cornellà de Llobregat on Sunday night as Espanyol fans invaded the ground and tried to attack FC Barcelona players after the visitors won the La Liga title.

Barcelona defeated Espanyol 4-2 to win the Spanish league title for the first time since 2019. After claiming their 27th title, Xavi Hernandez's men celebrated on their arch-rival's turf, which did not please the home team supporters. When the players and staff joined hands in the middle of the ground, singing and dancing, several Espanyol fans stormed the ground and attempted to attack them.

The horrific attack forced Barcelona players to flee down the tunnel to safety. According to reports, some violent fans managed to enter the tunnel even though security guards captured many of them as the situation escalated.

Match was pretty much done and dusted in the first half

Talking about the match, Robert Lewandowski gave his side an early lead in the 11th minute. Defender Alejandro Balde scored the second goal in the 20th minute before their star striker Lewandowski netted his second goal of the night in the 40th minute. The game was done and dusted in the first half itself, but Jules Kounde gave Barca a four-goal lead by shaking Espanyol's net in the 53rd minute.

However, the home side scored two consolation goals in the 73rd minute and injury time to reduce the margin of embarrassment. Thrashing relegation-threatened Espanyol, Hernandez's side won the La Liga title for the first time since Lionel Messi left the club.

The win also helped Barcelona to take a 14-point lead over the second-placed defending champions Real Madrid in the La Liga standings. Meanwhile, Espanyol are currently placed in the 19th spot with just 31 points in 34 matches. Barcelona will play Real Sociedad at Camp Nou on Saturday, while Espanyol will face Rayo Vallecano at the Estadio de Vallecas on Sunday.
