After India’s shock exit from the 20-20 World Cup final against England. The senior players were rested, and India announced a very young squad for the three-match series against New Zealand. Due to the hectic international schedule, regular coach Rahul Dravid opted for a break and VVS Laxman has filled in for him for the New Zealand tour.
Looking at how India had picked the team, Shubman Gill was in line to play his maiden T20 for India in the second game against New Zealand. The game is being played at the Bay Oval and ahead of the toss, Hardik Pandya, who has been appointed as skipper for this series, said that Shubman Gill is not playing and Ishaan Kishan and Rishabh Pant were opening the batting.
Speaking on the same, Gaurav Kapur, the anchor of the show, asked about Gill not playing in the team to which Ashish Nehra gave out a witty reply. The conversation went something like this, “Thing is we wanted to see Ashish's boy, Shubman Gill make his debut today,” said the anchor.
Nehra came strong with his reply saying, “He's India's boy.” “He's your boy. He's played more T20s for you than he has played for India” Gaurav added. To which Nehra said, “He will play for India soon.”

It is exciting to finally get a game - Hardik Pandya
Here is what Hardik Pandya had to say at the toss - "To get a game, a proper 20-over game, is exciting. We still need to assess the conditions and see how the wicket is behaving. If the wicket doesn't help you, and you try playing shots and lose wickets, and it doesn't rain, you might be in a difficult position. We'll assess the situation, and if the rain comes, we'll reassess."
India will play Three T20Is and three ODIs in this short tour of New Zealand. The Men in Blue had a wonderful campaign in the 20-20 World Cup winning four out of their five games in the Super 12 stages which was the most victories recorded by any team, sadly, they crashed out due to a loss in the semi-finals.
