Samson's brilliant captaincy and presence of quality players in the squad, make last year's finalists strong contenders this season as well. Ahead of their next assignment, an away game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday, RR leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal drew similarities between Samson and legend MS Dhoni.
After a great spell with RCB, Chahal was picked by the Royals in the IPL 2022 mega auction, and in his debut season, he earned the Purple Cap for taking the most wickets in the season, i.e., 27. With 11 wickets already in his pocket, he is in contention this season as well.
Before joining RCB, the 32-year-old was a member of the Mumbai Indians (MI), which means he has played under four captains - MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and now Samson - across IPL and for India.
"I think, all three captains whom I have played under, I have gotten that liberty that a bowler requires, whether its Mahi bhai, Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. So yeah, that's the one thing I have gotten," Chahal said in an interview.
"He is very similar to Mahi bhai"
When asked about his favourite captain, the spin wizard had clear choice in Samson in the IPL. He also compared Samson to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni and credited the Kerala-born player for being a part of his growth as a bowler.
"In IPL, Sanju Samson is definitely my favourite. I feel like he is literally very similar to Mahi bhai as like him, he is very calm and chill. The 10 per cent or whatever growth I have had as a bowler in the last year, it is all because of Sanju. He told me, 'you have four overs, bowl whatever you want to, you are free from my side."

Totally true. I don’t know what sanju does off the field as captain but one thing i noticed is the rotation of bowlers, you can bring the best out of a bowler if you use him well. Sanju has mastered this art in the last couple of years.
