Mumbai Indians (MI) once again dominated while chasing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, winning by an overwhelming six-wicket margin against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Tuesday, May 9. The five-time champions chased down the target of 200 with more than three overs to spare and proved that no total is safe at the Wankhede Stadium.

MI won the toss and sent RCB to bat first on a pitch that has historically favoured the chasing side. RCB suffered an early setback when they lost Virat Kohli and Anuj Rawat in quick succession. However, skipper du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell rescued the visitors by adding a 120 runs partnership for the third wicket.

Du Plessis should have gone for a golden duck had Nehal Wadhera not dropped a catch at mid-wicket. The midfield turned out to be very costly as the South African cricketer went on to smash his sixth half-century of the season. The dangerous third-wicket stand was broken by the star bowler of the night Behrendroff, who scalped his third wicket of the night by dismissing Maxi for 68 runs off 33 balls.

Bangalore were 131/2 at the end of the 12th over and could have hoped for a total of around 210. But a brilliant comeback from the MI bowlers restricted their opponents to 199-6 in 20 overs.

Surya-Wadhera's third-wicket partnership led MI to a resounding win

In reply, Ishan Kishan played a blistering knock and gave the hosts an ideal start before being dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga in the fifth over for 42 (21). Skipper Rohit Sharma once again struggled with the bat and followed his opening partner in the same over. However, just as RCB built their innings with a third-wicket partnership, Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera added 150 to bring MI back into the game.

Surya was under-fire after failing to find runs in the initial matches, but he delivered when it mattered most, smashing 83 off 35 balls. The right-hander departed in the 16th over but took the team almost to the finish line. Vijaykumar Vaishak sent back Tim David in the same over, but Wadhera, unbeaten on 52 off 34 balls, ended the match with a six off the third ball of the 17th over.
