Girona striker Taty Castellanos had a memorable night, scoring four goals to help his team thrash Real Madrid 4-2 in La Liga on Tuesday, April 25. Castellanos became the first player to score four goals against Madrid in a single game since Robert Lewandowski in 2013. The embarrassing defeat not only cost Los Blancos the match but also lowered their hopes of winning the Spanish league title as table toppers Barcelona now lead by 11 points.
Castellanos scored his four goals in just over an hour of play. He netted in the 12th minute to give the team an early lead. The Argentine scored the another in the 24th minute and extended the lead, but Vinícius Júnior made it 2-1 with a header in the 34th minute.
Castellanos made it 3-1 just after halftime (46'), and he grabbed his fourth goal in the 62nd minute. The 24-year-old received a standing ovation from the Girona supporters when he was substituted in the 72nd minute. When it appeared like Madrid would lose by three goals, Vini Jr set up Lucas Vázquez's goal in the 85th minute.
“It’s a dream to be able to score against Madrid, one of the best teams in the world, but to score four times, I could never have imagined,” Castellanos said.
"It was a dream night. I never imagined this, (I'm) enjoying it with our fans, with the people who have sent me support -- my family, people in Argentina, they are always supporting me and that's fundamental," he added.
Castellanos, who is on loan from MLS side New York City FC, has played an integral part for Girona as the newly-promoted side are having a great campaign in this season. The Girona forward is also their top scorer this season with 12 goals.
It looked like it was the end of the world for him: Girona coach
Girona coach Michel was impressed by Castellanos' stunning performance and said he is doing perfectly. “The other day he had a miss against Barcelona and it looked like it was the end of the world for him,” Michel said.
“But this is his first season in Europe, coming from a league that is very good but has nothing to do with Europe in terms of rhythm, tactics and situations, so he had to adapt to that and I think that he has been doing that perfectly," he added.
With this win, Girona moved to ninth place in the La Liga points table and practically guaranteed its place in the first division next season.
