Manchester City ran over Real Madrid in the second leg as the English club thrashed the reigning champions 4-0 (5-1 on aggregate) to advance to the UEFA Champions League final. A fully packed Etihad Stadium witnessed a complete dominance from Pep Guardiola's men on Wednesday night (May 17), hinting that they are on their way to claiming the elusive trophy.

Man City's goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland tried to give his side an early lead, but Thibaut Courtois made an outstanding stop to deny the Norwegian international's header. However, a first-half brace from midfielder Bernardo Silva (23', 37') gave City a commanding lead before the break.

Carlo Ancelotti's men were able to keep City quiet for the next thirty minutes, but Manuel Akanji broke the deadlock in the 76th minute. Argentina forward Julian Alvarez's late goal (90'+1') stretched his team's lead to four goals and sealed a resounding victory.

Sport always give you a second chance to take revenge: City manager

Speaking after their emphatic win, City manager Guardiola said:Β "To play like that against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals is a huge satisfaction.

"I had the feeling we had the pain of last year in our stomach. Today it all came out in our energy and desire. Sport always give you a second chance to take revenge. We had the luck to get that chance this year and we took it."

City avenged a loss to Ancelotti's men at the same stage last year and set the stage for a high-voltage clash against Inter Milan on June 10 in Istanbul. Meanwhile, the Spanish club's boss Carlo Ancelotti said that his side deserved to lose and that hurts a lot.

"They played better than us and deserved to win. They put a lot of pressure at the beginning, it worked out well for them because they made it very difficult for us to get the ball in play and they went two goals ahead," Ancelotti told reporters.

"It is a defeat that hurts, it hurts a lot. But it can happen. We reached the semi-finals of the Champions League against a strong opponent, they played better and left us without a final. We have to learn and for the next season, to be better," he added.
