The 7th match of WPL 2024 saw the Delhi Capitals overpowered the Royal Challengers Bangalore by – runs at their home turf. RCB were coming in this game with two victories in two games under their belt and were sitting comfortably at the top of the points table with the home crowd being their 12th player.

Delhi Capitals on the other hand were also oozing with confidence after a one-sided victory against the UP Warriorz in their last game and came all guns blazing against RCB. Smriti Mandhana after winning the toss sent Delhi to bat first on a batting paradise. 

Delhi’s opener Shefali Verma got a chance early in her innings when her catch was put down by Shreyanka Patil and she made the most of her chance. Shefali smoked her first half-century of the season off just 31 deliveries which included 3 boundaries and 4 sixes. Alice Capsey also chipped in with 46 runs of 33 balls in her 82-run stand along with Shefali Verma.

Though Delhi got a good start from it top order batters it was the brisk 48-run partnership for the 5th wicket between Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen that took the match away from RCB and took Delhi to a strong total of 194 runs in their 20 overs. Marizanne Kapp scored 32 runs in 16 balls whereas Jonassen smashed 36 runs in just 16 deliveries. 

 Smriti Mandhan’s heroics goes in vain 

Chasing a huge total of 195 runs, Smriti Mandhana knew that it was 15-20 overs runs than what she would have anticipated and thus started hitting from the get to make the most of the powerplay. She played a blistering knock of 74 runs in just 43 deliveries but at the end, RCB fell 25 runs of short of Delhi’s score.

In the bowling department too, Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen emerged as top performers and 2 and 3 wickets respectively in their 4 overs. With this victory, Delhi Capitals have reached the summit of the points table with 2 victories in their 3 games and a better run rate than MI and RCB.
