In a watershed moment in cricketing history, India Women hammered England women by 347 runs to register the biggest win in terms of runs in Women’s Test cricket. On day 3rd of the only test match, England was given a mammoth target of 479 runs in the fourth innings but the English women succumbed to the Indian spinners who took 6 wickets between them in the fourth innings.
After losing the T20I series to England by 2-1, India Women came into the Test match with baggage but unfazed by the disappointment of the T20 series, Indian girls came into the match with a positive attitude and put on a tall first-innings total of 428 runs at a brisk pace and the England women could never recover from that as they got out cheaply on 136 and 131 runs in first and second innings respectively.
Deepti Sharma was the standout Player of the Match as she took 9 wickets in the match and scored a valiant half-century in the first innings. It is a momentous occasion for women’s cricket as they don’t get the opportunity to play the longest format and despite the lack of opportunity, the women triumphed over the experienced English side in a one-sided affair.
It is also a wake-up call for the Indian Cricket Board to organize more home and away Test matches for the women’s team in times to come as they have shown that they can become a reckoning force in the red-ball format too.
Harmanpreet was overjoyed by the effort
The Indian skipper was overjoyed by the effort of the team and lauded the performance of the girls. In the press conference after the match, she said, “Feeling great. We were thinking about how to win the game at the start of the match. Everything went according to plan. It was a plan, we had to execute those plans. We had a couple of days to prepare before the start of this game.
All the players took the responsibility and delivered their best. The first 40 minutes were crucial, as a team we were looking to pick wickets. I know I will get opportunities to score centuries in the future, but winning the game was important. They knew their plans and they executed them accordingly.”
The Indian cricket fans were overjoyed by the thumping victory of the Indian women’s team and celebrated on social media.
