South Africa is facing Australia today in the 2nd semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The team that will come out victorious in this contest will face India in the finals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and decided to bat first in overcast conditions at Eden Gardens. South Africa has been sublime in putting huge totals on board after batting first in this World Cup but today with heavy clouds covering and threat of constant showers during the day, it was a tricky call for Temba Bavuma but he took the risk and went with the set formula that had been working for South Africa throughout the tournament.

But this time it backfired for South Africa as they lost their captain Temba Bavuma in the first over after his nicked one to Josh Inglis on the bowling off Mitchell Starc. The conditions made it difficult for the batters as there was moisture both in the pitch and in the air as well and soon South Africa were 24 for 4 in a crunch semi-final game.

Although South Africa’s template of batting first and putting score on the board tactic was going well for them but given the fact that the wicket was under covers before the match and the constant threat of rain throughout the match, South Africa could have gone on to bowl first on this track.

Bavuma’s poor run continues

Temba Bavuma was in good form coming into this World Cup but it has been a below par campaign for South Africa and before the match there was speculations that whether or not he will be fit for the semi-final or not. But despite being fully fit, Bavuma played this match as he himself admitted during the toss.

Given that Reeza Hendrics is sitting on the bench, talks were going around that whether or not Bavuma deserves to be in the team or not and this failure of Bavuma will give more fuel to the fire.
