Pakistan’s skipper and Colombo Strikers opener Babar Azam was dismissed cheaply while his side was chasing 167 runs against the Dambulla Aura; eventually, the Strikers lost the game by 50 runs as they were bowled out for 116 runs. Whereas Babar was dismissed by his Pakistani teammate Hasan Ali on 11 (13).

At the start of the play, the Kusal Mendis-led side won the toss and opted to bat first, Aura didn’t start well, as they lost four wickets inside seven overs. Later, it was Alex Ross and Ben McDermott's 100-run partnership that took Dambulla to the 166/5 mark. McDermott was the top scorer for the side with his unbeaten 69 (46).

Colombo Strikers lost wickets at regular intervals in the chase

While in the chase, the Niroshan Dickwella-led side lost their opener Pathum Nissanka for 12 (8) in the third over, then wickets fell the next over as skipper Dickwella was bowled by Janith Liyanage for 17 (6), and till the end of the powerplay, Pakistan’s star batter Babar was also dismissed cheaply. After that, the wicket fell at regular intervals, and at the end, Mohammad Nawaz and Iftikhar Ahmed scored some handy runs, with 20 (24) and 18 (16) respectively.

Initially, it does not seem like such a mammoth total that Aura will win by 50 run margin but Noor Ahmad and  Dushan Hemantha dominated the middle overs with two wickets each, and at the start of the innings, Pakistan’s pacer Hasan, with his three wickets by giving 16 runs in four overs, shined with both the new ball and in slog overs, including the efforts by his fellow pacer Binura Fernando.

Now at the points table, Aura is at the top of the table with five wins in seven matches and 10 points, while Strikers are still at the bottom of the table with four losses in six games and four points. For the 17th match of the LPL 2023, the Jaffna Kings will take on the Galle Titans at Colombo on August 13.
