The Punjab team was on fire in the 2014 edition of the Indian T20 League until they lost to the Kolkata team in the finals. However, it was the last instance of the team reaching the Playoffs. Punjab stopped to a lower level in the next consecutive seasons. In the last three seasons, the team has managed to win only 19 games and it has come to haunt the team's morale.
It was earlier reported that the team was all set to sack Anil Kumble from the coach's seat. Ahead of the 2023 season of the Indian T20 League, a source from the management has revealed to ESPNCricinfo that Trevor Bayliss will now be the coach of the team.
The source said that the paper works will be completed soon and the team will make the official announcement anytime.
"The team has decided to go ahead with Trevor who is among the best in the business and has a proven record. The management is hoping that the team goes on to win the title under his guidance. The paperwork is expected to be completed soon," the source was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
Trevor Bayliss' golden run in the Indian T20 League:
Trevor Bayliss, the 2019 World Cup coach, is pretty underrated in the league. He went on to coach the England team in the 2019 World Cup and eventually the team won the cup under him. In the Indian T20 League, the Australian helped the Kolkata team clinch the title in the years 2012 and 2014.
He then came to the Hyderabad team and did not have a good stint with the team. Now that the Punjab team have him to guide, it will be crucial for the right selection of players in the mini-auction. The team might have a new structure if they release most of their players into the auction. If not, then Bayliss might have some plans in his mind.
As it stands, Punjab and Hyderabad teams will have new coaches in the management. For Hyderabad, it will be Brian Lara who will coach the team.
