Women batters would be looking to make a mark in the inaugural edition of the Women’s T20 league. The much-awaited tournament begins on March 4, with Gujarat taking on Mumbai. Heavy favourites, Bangalore are up against Delhi on March 5.
There are several batters who would be looking to leave a stamp in the tournament and make their franchise win. But there are only a few players who would strive throughout the tournament with the bat.
Let's take a look at the players who might shine at the tournament and get the prize for the highest run-getter.
1) Harmanpreet Kaur
Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of India, maybe 33 years old, but she still scores runs reliably. The great player has amassed a significant number of T20 runs and is almost at 3000 runs in T20 Internationals. Her batting average in the shortest format is 28.26, which is decent but her experience as India's captain would be vital for the Mumbai franchise.
The captain of India is a gutsy off-spinner and a useful hitter. She has consistently performed well for India and has the ability to alter the outcome of a match in a few overs. The 33-year-old has a wealth of expertise thanks to her more than 270 appearances for the Women in Blue and more than 6,000 runs across many forms.
2) Smriti Mandhana
Smriti Mandhana, an Indian cricketer, has been Team India's most crucial player in recent years and has contributed to several match-winning performances. She is currently ranked third among female batters in the ICC T20I rankings. Mandhana got the highest price during the WPL auction when she was bought by the Bangalore team for INR 3.40 Crore.
At her peak, she scored 159 runs in five games at an astounding strike rate of 151.42 during the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Mandhana eclipsed Stafanie Taylor of the West Indies' previous record of the most 50+ scores while chasing in women's T20Is in December of last year. One more than Taylor, the Indian batter has 12 fifty-plus scores.
3) Shafali Verma
Shafali Varma, the under-19 World Cup-winning captain, was roped in by the Delhi Capitals for a hefty price. She would be looking to replicate the form she showed in the tournament in the inaugural edition of the Women’s T20 League 2023.
She had a below-par 20-20 Women’s World Cup and would be looking to forget the past and make sure she is the top run-getter not only for her side but in the whole tournament. She surely has the potential to be one of the highest run scorers in the tournament and the franchise has surely instilled belief in her
4) Natalie Sciver-Brunt
Natalie Sciver of England is one of those athletes that draws attention wherever she goes on the cricket field. She has destroyed elite bowling lineups and put on a display of her magnificent stroke play. Her amazing bowling abilities have left the world in awe.
Sciver is a good addition to the Mumbai-based franchise because she can help in both divisions. The Mumbai franchise paid INR 3.20 crores to purchase her and she is one of the top overseas players in the Women’s T20 League.
5) Deandra Dottin
One of the most formidable and energetic all-rounders in all of cricket is West Indies' Deandra Dottin. Her career has included more than 6,000 runs and more than 250 matches, giving Gujarat access to her global experience. Dottin will give the franchise real ability to win games.
Dottin has amassed two five-wicket hauls, and five international hundreds, including an unbeaten 150. In 2010, she became the first woman to achieve a T20I century, doing so against South Africa in just 38 balls, still, the fastest feat accomplished by a female in the format.
