After the loss of the Indian team against Australia in the finals of the World Test Championship, the fans and the former cricketers criticized the Indian players. Many blamed the batters for the loss, and some blamed the bowlers. Management, coaches, selectors, and everyone involved with the Indian team were blamed. The players received the highest criticism.
One of the great Indian cricketers, Sunil Gavaskar, had claimed the Indian players to be ‘egoistic’ as they did not approach the former cricketers for talking on batting or bowling. The former Indian captain felt that today’s players do not talk enough with the experienced ones, who could help with the technical aspects of the game.
Gavaskar recalled the likes of Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, and Sachin Tendulkar, who had visited the 74-year-old to talk about their batting. The batter from Mumbai felt that today’s cricketers do not want to talk with the former cricketers, which was not the case about 10-12 years ago. Kapil Dev, the former Indian captain, reacted to the comments of Sunil Gavaskar peculiarly. The former World Cup winner felt that today’s cricketers are confident, but do not feel the necessity of former cricketers.
Kapil Dev's take on Sunil Gavaskar's comments
The great cricketer said “Differences come out, the good (thing) about these players...is that they are very confident. The negative point is they think they know everything. I don't know how to put it better than that. But they are confident, but they think 'you don't have to ask anybody'. What we believe is an experienced person can help you,” in an interview.
“Sometimes when there is too much money, arrogance comes. These cricketers think they know everything. That's the difference. I would say some cricketers need help. When Sunil Gavaskar is there, why can't you talk? Where is the ego? There is no ego as such. They feel 'we are good enough'. Maybe they are good enough, but with extra help from somebody who has seen 50 seasons of cricket, he knows things. Listening sometimes can change your thought” added Kapil Dev.
