Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has praised young batter Prithvi Shaw for breaking his all-time Ranji Trophy score. Shaw made a sensational 379 against Assam in the ongoing Ranji match breaking Manjrekar’s 337 during the 1990-91 season against Hyderabad.

With 379 Shaw remains only behind BB Nimbalkar who has a record of 443 runs for Maharashtra against Saurashtra.

Sanjay Manjrekar is a former Indian cricketer who played for the Indian national cricket team between 1987 and 1996. He is a right-handed batsman and played as a specialist in the middle order.

He made his debut for India on 12th November 1987 against Pakistan, he played 37 test matches and scored 2204 runs at an average of 42.08. He made his highest score of 223 in test cricket against England in 1990 at Lord's Cricket Ground.

Manjrekar also played 74 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for India, scoring 2439 runs at an average of 34.83. He made his highest ODI score of 108 against South Africa in 1991.

Manjrekar also played a significant role in the Indian team as a commentator and cricket expert after he retired from cricket. Naturally, the former batter has a lot of information about the players in the country and outside.

Shaw however seems to be one of his favourites as Manjrekar tweeted, “Thrilled that my record of 377 was beaten by a batter I adore! Well done Prithvi,” right after Shaw’s brilliant innings ended.

Management should help him get on the right track- Gambhir

Questions are being raised about Shaw’s continued exclusion from the Indian side. Former India player Gautam Gambhir has also criticised the management for the mistreatment of the young batter.

“Someone like Prithvi Shaw, the kind of start he had to his international career and the kind of talent he has, you back a player on talent. Yes, you have to look at the upbringing as well- where he come from and the challenges he’s had as well. It makes even more sense for the management and the selectors to keep him around the mix and help him get on the right track,” said Gambhir.
