Mumbai Indians (MI) have had a poor start to their IPL 2023 campaign, losing their first two matches by a significant margin. With their next match against Delhi Capitals (DC), the defending champions will be looking to turn things around and get their first win of the tournament. Here are three potential changes that MI could make to their playing XI to get back to winning ways.
Riley Meredith in for Jason Behrendorff
Australian pacer Jason Behrendorff has had a forgettable start to his IPL 2023 campaign, picking up just one wicket in two matches at an economy of 10.17. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), he went for 37 runs in his three-over spell, while against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), he started well by dismissing Devon Conway but couldn't maintain the momentum.
MI could consider bringing in his compatriot Riley Meredith, who has a reputation for bowling consistently above 140 km/h. Meredith has played 13 IPL matches, picking up 12 wickets at an economy of 8.48. He has been a crucial player for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL) with his fiery bowling. His inclusion could add some much-needed firepower to MI's bowling attack.
Arjun Tendulkar in for Arshad Khan
MI's left-arm pacer Arshad Khan has had a poor start to his IPL 2023 campaign, picking up just one wicket in two matches at an economy of 14.00. MI could consider replacing him with Arjun Tendulkar, the son of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. Arjun has been part of the MI camp since 2021 but is yet to make his IPL debut.
Arjun has shown promise in the domestic T20 circuit, picking up 12 wickets in 11 matches at an economy of 6.60. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he picked up 10 wickets for his team Goa in seven matches at an economy of 5.69, with the best figures of 4/10. His impressive bowling numbers make him a potential replacement for Arshad, who has struggled with his line and length in the tournament.
Dewald Brevis in for Cameron Green
Cameron Green, the second-most expensive player in IPL 2023 auction, has struggled to live up to his price tag so far. In two matches, he has scored just 17 runs at a strike rate of 113.33 and picked up one wicket at an economy of 10.00. MI could consider replacing him with Dewald Brevis, a 19-year-old South African all-rounder who has shown promise in the domestic circuit.
Brevis has been part of the MI squad since last year and has played some impressive knocks in the IPL 2022. He has the ability to play aggressive shots and could reinforce MI's batting lineup. Additionally, he can bowl at a decent pace and pick up crucial wickets, making him a valuable asset for the team.
