The T20 format is a very short and fast format but at the same time, it can be mentally draining on the players. On another note, it is very demanding on players who play all three formats. As a cricketer in India, to be active in all three formats is not a mean feat, and even more so when you are at the fag end of your career.
The format requires out-of-the-box thinking and is very intense as the game can change in the blink of an eye. Here we take a look at three Indian players who might retire after the 20-20 World Cup 2022.
Here are the three Indian players:
1. Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin, being 36, has not set the ball rolling in the current edition of the 20-20 World Cup 2022. He has picked up 6 wickets from five games. He played white ball cricket after a long gap having made a comeback after three years since 2017 into the 20-20 World Cup squad in 2021 and he has been there since.
Ashwin has been the linchpin of the Indian bowling attack in test matches where he has picked up 442 wickets in ten years in just 86 matches at an outstanding economy rate of 2.77 with 30 five-wicket hauls to his name. He could retire from the shortest format so that he can give full attention to Test Cricket.
2. Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma began captaining India in the T20I format just after the 20-20 World Cup 2021 ended. He is 35 years old since he started leading the side, he has been prone to injuries due to which he missed important matches for India. He has 3826 runs at a strike rate of 139.68. He has played T20Is for 15 years.
With age not on his side, and him being criticized for failing to maintain fitness standards, there is a good chance that he might quit leading India in the T20 format so that he would have a lesser workload on his shoulders. His stint as a leader of India in this format could also be a short one.
3. Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik made a stunning comeback into the national side on the back of amazing performances in the Indian T20 League 2022 for his franchise where he scored 330 runs in 16 matches at an average of 55 and a strike rate of 183.33. This gave him a national call-up at the age of 36 and now at 37, it could be his last World Cup.
He had a back injury at this 20-20 World Cup in Australia, and he has not excelled for India in the tournament down under where he has scored 14 games, he has played in just 22 balls he has faced. He has not been able to finish games for India in the World Cup. With age, not on his side, he could call it quits from T20I’s and end his India career.
