In the 38th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) faced off in the PCA IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. LSG won the match by 56 runs and LSG climb to the second position on the table, with five wins in eight games.

The game saw a mindboggling 458 runs being scored with LSG posting a humongous total of 257, which is the second-highest total in IPL history. It was PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan who won the toss and put LSG to bat first. And he probably may have been left to rue with the decision, given how the innings panned out.

LSG opener Kyle Mayers set the innings ablaze from the get-go with a blistering 54 runs off 24 balls. In the first six-over powerplay, LSG scored 74 runs for the loss of two wickets. After Mayersโ€™s departure, it was the third-wicket partnership of Ayush Badoni and Marcus Stoinis that further upped the ante. Badoni departed after scoring 43 runs off 24 runs. But the star with the bat on the day was Stoinis with a spectacular knock of 72 runs off 40 balls. The finishing touches were given by Nicholas Pooran with a quickfire 45 runs off 19 balls.

LSG prove to be too good for PBKS

PBKS had a tall order with a target of 258 in hand and needed an ideal start. But with their skipper, Dhawan being dismissed in the very first over, their chase was made so much more improbable. After two early wickets, it was Atharva Taide, at number three, who tried to pull the strings with a splendid 66 runs off 36 balls. Sikandar Raza also got off to a good start but could not keep going, eventually falling for 36 runs off 22 balls.

In the end, none of the PBKS batters could quite stand up and play a big innings to keep the chase afloat, and unsurprisingly, the target proved to be too much for them. PBKS finished with 201 runs in 19.5 overs.
