The former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has come up with a critical analysis for the senior leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. The 31-year-old had a poor outing in the second of the five-match T20I series against South Africa. He went on to concede 49 runs in his quota of four overs claiming a mere one wicket to his name.
He had also an off day during the first ODI when he conceded 26 runs in just a 13-ball spell. After poor performances in two consecutive matches, Chahal is under the critical eyes of fans and experts of the game as well.
Recently, the Gujarat mentor Gautam Gambhir delivered his remarks over Chahal’s performance in the second T20I. He advised the leg spinner to come up with variations in the pace to tempt the batters.
It is very important for Chahal to vary his pace - Gambhir
“It’s very important to vary your pace. If Chahal thinks ‘I’ll bowl tight and get wickets’, it’s not going to happen. He can give 50 runs in four overs. But if he picks up three wickets, he can take the team to a situation from where it can win the match. But if he concedes 40-50 runs and gets just one wicket, it’s a problem,” Gambhir was quoted as saying during a show at Star Sports.
“He needs to bowl slow and tempt the batter. No issues if he gets his for a couple of sixes. In the second T20I, none of the SA batters tried to step out against Chahal. They were hitting the leg-spinner from the crease, which means he (Chahal) was trying to bowl it fast. We expect those kinds of deliveries from Axar, not Chahal,” Former world champion batter added later.
Speaking of the game, the hosts went into the field without making any change in the playing XI of the last game. South Africa invited India to bat first after winning the toss. The hosts could manage to put a low total of 148 runs for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs.
Bavuma’s men easily chased the target with the batting heroics of Heinrich Klassen who smashed a match-defining knock of 81 runs.
