The Melbourne Derby took place in the 27th match of the Big Bash League with The Melbourne Stars taking on the Melbourne Renegades. The Melbourne Stars won the toss and chose to bowl. There was a little battle between the two New Zealanders Trent Boult and Martin Guptill who were playing for the Stars and the Renegades respectively.
The Melbourne Stars got off to a good start as Sam Harper was out for a first ball duck by Luke Wood. Then Guptill looked good for his 32 off 27 balls with two fours and one six. He was dismissed by Beau Webster. Shaun Marsh then came in and made 32 off 35 balls.
Mackenzie Harvey and Jonathan Wells made 32 with two fours and one six and 24 off 18 balls with three fours. The Melbourne Renegades batter could not convert their starts and ended up scoring 141-7 in their 20 overs.
But the talking point of the match was a non-striker run out that happened during the Melbourne Renegades innings in the fourth ball of the 19th over. Zampa made the appeal for the run out, but it was turned down because Zampa withdrew from his follow through and then whipped the bails off at the bowler's end and then appealed for the run out.Β
Tom Rogers the batter was well short of his crease, and he was not happy with the appeal. The third umpire was of the opinion that Zampa had not completed his action before dislodging the bails and so he was not justified in claiming for the run out. The umpire held his nerve under pressure and gave a cool calm collected decision in the end.
The Melbourne Renegades were too good for the Melbourne Stars in the end as Tom Rogers picked up 5-16 in his four overs. Mujeeb Ur Rahaman complimented him by picking up 7-2 in his four overs. The Melbourne Stars fell down like nine pins and ended their 20 overs at 108-9. The Melbourne Renegades have won the first round of the Melbourne derby against the Melbourne Stars.
Twitter was abuzz, let us take a look at the reactions here-
I donβt get the flack the bowler gets for a Mankad , all the batsman has to do is stay in his crease until the ball is released.π€¦π»ββοΈ

Well if the bowler now attempts to run the batsmen out after being hit for a 6 will it still be a deadball? Cuz it's past the vertical

Crazy scenes. More Indians are supporting Adam Zampa than Aussies. David Hussey admitted that Zampa was not right in his approach. #CricketTwitter

I score Adam Zampa 10/10 for guts and 0/10 for execution.

Tell your commentators and your umpires that his bowling arm going past the vertical is irrelevant if the batter has left his ground beforehand.

Please use the correct description of the situation. It was an attempt to run out the non striker.

Should have been out got saved due to technicality. The non-striker started running. is this the spirit of the game ? or only running out the batsman is against it.

indians have mastered this art! no one else can do it!

Batter times it reasonably well if Zampa had released the ball. Zampa makes a hash of it & attempts a runout when not entitled. Dead ball, play on.
