During the second Test against West Indies, Virat Kohli reached another milestone in his illustrious career, becoming the fourth Indian to play 500 international matches. However, the amount of effort he puts in to score every run makes you question whether he is a debutant and how he maintains his fitness level. As good as Kohli is at finding gaps to hit boundaries, he can also keep the scoreboard ticking with singles and doubles.
Meanwhile, a stunning effort from Kohli to seize a double on Day 1 of the series decider at Trinidad stunned West Indies legend Ian Bishop. In the 72nd over, Kohli noticed the prospect of a double and went for it with his partner Ravindra Jadeja. But, when Kohli neared the crease, he realised he was in trouble as the throw from the third man came in quickly to the strikers' end.
The 34-year-old made a full-stretch dive to ensure his run was completed, and Bishop could not keep calm after witnessing Kohli's commitment. The former West Indies pacer praised Kohli's 'desperation' to score every run even after reaching greater heights in the game.
"Absolutely superb. That's the sort of desperation you love to see incorporated in your batting and batsmanship. This is a Test match. You sometimes see guys doing this in desperation in a one-day or white-ball scenario, but here is a guy who has been around for 500 international games and in a Test match, knows the value of every run. Putting his body on the line and diving to make sure he's in. That tells you how badly he wants whatever he gets out of this innings," Bishop said.
Wish every young batter in the Caribbean ran like that: Bishop
Immediately after the dive, Kohli signaled for the physio and the game continued after a brief halt with India ending the day on upper hand. Bishop also expressed his desire to see young cricketers from West Indies exhibit the same determination as Kohli to find runs by running between the wickets rather than only through boundaries.
"I wish I could get every young batter in the Caribbean - male and female - running like that and not just sitting back waiting for boundaries. You know how much you can top up your scores but this sort of intensity... I have seen a number of batters no desperate enough to dive and commit themselves like that. This is a good example," added the 55-year-old.
