Twelve years ago, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's long-on six at the Wankhede Stadium not only sealed India's World Cup victory, but was etched in the memory of every Indian cricket fan. Two days ago, on April 2, the entire nation commemorated India's glory in 2011 and the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) now plans to make the moment of victory even more memorable in the years to come.
Chasing a target of 275 in the ODI World Cup final against Sri Lanka, after a crucial knock from Gautam Gambhir (97 off 122) and Virat Kohli (35 off 49), MS Dhoni played a match-winning knock with Player of the Series Yuvraj Singh. The wicketkeeper batter, who scored 91 runs off 79 balls, took India past the finish line with a six off right-arm pacer Nuwan Kulasekara’s delivery.
MCA president Amol Kale said that a small memorial will be built in Wankhede Stadium to commemorate India's World Cup win. He also said that it will be built on the exact spot where Dhoni's iconic winning six had landed in the MCA stand.
"The MCA Apex Council has decided to make a small victory memorial in Wankhede Stadium stands to commemorate India's 2011 World Cup win. The memorial will be built at the location where MS Dhoni's historic winning six had landed in the stands," he said.
MCA hopes Dhoni will inaugurate the memorial
At the same time, there were reports from Indian Express that Dhoni himself would be present to inaugurate the memorial and he will be presented with a memento. The association expects the 41-year-old to inaugurate the memorial when he comes to Mumbai for the Indian T20 League match against Mumbai on April 8. However, it is learned that a date has not been finalised and it will entirely depend on the Chennai skipper's availability.
"MCA will also felicitate MS Dhoni when he inaugurates the World Cup Victory Memorial in Wankhede Stadium," said the MCA president.
Meanwhile, reacting to the latest report, many fans trolled former India opener Gambhir, who has always been critical of Dhoni's winning six. Some fans also supported Gambhir's statement that not just Dhoni's six but all the players contributed to India's historic moment.
