Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pacer Avesh Khan was heavily trolled on social media for his 'iconic' helmet-throwing celebration following his side's nail-biting victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during the Indian Premier League 2023. The encounter between them lit up the tournament, and Avesh has now opened up about the incident, stating it was 'too much' from him.

The much-debated celebration took place during KL Rahul-led LSG's 1 wicket victory on the last ball of the innings. Needing a single off the last ball, Avesh at the striker's end swung his bat but missed and ran towards the non-striker's. Wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik fumbled and failed to get a run-out, resulting in Super Giants winning the game in a dramatic way.

The right-arm pacer couldn't even connect the ball, but celebrated as he hit a six on the last ball - taking his helmet off and throwing it hard on the ground.

“Yeh social media mein mera mahool bana rehta hai and helmet incident thoda jyada hogaya tha (That helmet incident was a bit too much, I shouldn’t have done that). I realised later that I shouldn’t have done this. It just happened in the heat of the moment. I now feel sad that yaar yeh sab cheez nahi karna tha," Avesh said in an interview with The Indian Express.

Avesh admits that IPL 2023 did not go as he expected

The 26-year-old also commented about his bowling performance in the IPL 2023, admitting that it did not go exactly as expected. He could play only nine games and took eight wickets.

“If you compare my past two IPL seasons before this one, it went the way I wanted too. However, even though the season didn’t go well as per my standard, I maintained my economy rate which is less than 10. I bowl crucial overs 4 or 5th over and later in death,” he said.

The Madhya Pradesh cricketer last played for India in October 2022 when he featured against South Africa. With the West Indies series set to begin next month, Avessh is hoping the selectors will consider him for a return to the Indian team.
