The Asia Cup 2023 resumed after a day's break with a highly anticipated clash as Team India, the tournament favourites, squared off against Pakistan in Kandy. Under overcast skies, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat, a decision met with mixed fan opinions. The opening partnership between Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma looked promising until rain interrupted play.
Following the rain delay, India experienced a top-order collapse that left fans frustrated. Rohit Sharma (11 off 22), Shubman Gill (10 off 32), Virat Kohli (4 off 7), and Shreyas Iyer (14 off 9) all departed with meagre scores. Pakistan's new-ball bowlers, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, wreaked havoc on India's top order, reducing them to 66/4.
However, a remarkable rescue mission unfolded with Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya forming a stellar 138-run partnership. Kishan scored 82 off 81, including nine fours and two sixes, while Hardik Pandya contributed 87 off 90, featuring seven fours and one six. Together, they propelled the Men in Blue's total to 239/6. Yet, after their dismissals, India crumbled to Naseem Shah's impressive bowling, ultimately getting bundled out for 266 with seven balls remaining.
Pakistan are the current leaders of Group A
Pakistan now leads Group A with 3 points. Speaking of Pakistan's bowling, Shaheen Shah Afridi, arguably one of the best new-ball bowlers in recent times, delivered another outstanding performance, claiming figures of 4/35 in ten overs. His partner in crime, Haris Rauf, returned with figures of 3/58. Naseem Shah made a significant impact towards the end of the Indian innings, scalping Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah to finish with 3/36 in 8.5 overs.
India's next challenge awaits them against Nepal on Monday, September 4, at the same venue in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Currently, Pakistan leads the Group table with a win over Nepal in the first game and a game that failed to produce results. This concludes the group stage for Pakistan, who will now compete in the Super Four stages of Asia Cup 2023. India, however, must secure a victory against Nepal to secure their path to the Super Four.
