Hardik Pandya is set to lead India in the five-T20I series against West Indies. The first match of the T20I series is going to be historic for the Indian side at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, as it will be India's 200th T20I match on August 3.
Interestingly, the Indian team will become the second side after their neighbouring country, Pakistan, to achieve this feat, as Pakistan was the first side to play the 200th T20I. The Men in Green played the 200th T20I against England last year. Whereas India won the Test and ODI series 1-0 and 2-1 respectively.
Speaking of the series, senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja will be missing from this one. Suryakumar Yadav has been made vice-captain of the Indian side, while, apart from skipper Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel is in the team as an experienced campaigner. However, despite the absence of senior players, in the selection of the Playing XI, surely management will have trouble choosing the right players for the playing XI.
Hardik Pandya-led Indian team will be looking to experiment with youngsters in T20I series against WI
Men in Blue have recalled youngsters like Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, and Ravi Bishnoi, who were not part of the tour in ODI and Test fixtures. While have included uncapped players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, and pacer Mukesh Kumar for clashing against two-time champions.
However, Rovman Powell-led West Indies will look to make a comeback in the series after losing ODI and Test series. They are a formidable side in 20-over format fixtures and won the T20I series against South Africa earlier this year. Star Caribbean player Nicholas Pooran will be back in the squad after his incredible knock in the Major League Cricket (MLC) finals.
Pooran missed the ODI fixture because of his T20 commitment, while other players to look at in the series from the home side are Oshane Thomas, Shai Hope, and Shimron Hetmyer. In the end, it will be interesting to see how the Indian side will play in the series, clearly in senior players' absence Team India is looking to experiment with young players for the T20I World Cup 2024.
