Suryakumar Yadav has come in and taken the World by storm with his wonderful batting in T20 cricket at the late age of 30 when he made his debut for India. In him, India found a player who can switch gears at will and also play an unorthodox brand of cricket. He has had a wonderful 2022 where he has scored 1164 runs at an average of 46.56 and a strike rate of 187.43.
India’s T20 batting had a hint of predictability to it and with Suryakumar in the ranks, he gave India a new dimension in the batting because of the shots he plays and also his 360-degree way of playing T20 cricket. Virat Kohli, who has stitched many stands with the 32-year-old has been witness to the same. Suryakumar revealed a chat that happened between him and Virat Kohli when the right-handed batter was playing one of his unbelievable innings. “Once I was batting with Virat (Kohli) bhai, and he came and told me “tu video game khel raha hai kya? Alag chal raha hai tera bhi (Are you playing video games? You are at a different level).” It felt nice to hear these things," Suryakumar told the Indian Express.
Rohit Sharma has known me for a long time- Suryakumar Yadav
He also talked about Rohit Sharma who has spent a long time with him in Mumbai in the Indian T20 League. Rohit has seen the evolution of Suryakumar as a middle-lower order batter when he started early on in the Indian T20 League for the Kolkata franchise and then when he batted at the top order for Mumbai. He has also told him to go and do what he does best in white-ball cricket.
“Rohit (Sharma) is the only one who has seen me for a very long time. But this season, he saw so many knocks that a time came when he didn’t tell me anything. In a few games, he said 'mujhe ab kuchh bolna nahi abhi tere baare mein (Now I don’t have anything to say about you)'," He added.
Suryakumar has been the silver lining for the Indian Team, and he will look to continue his attacking style of cricket. The big positive for him is that he hits the ball at unusual areas of the ground and also, he has the hunger and drive to stay with the Men in Blue as long as possible since he debuted at a late age for India.
