India has a big population of 2.1 billion people and it has been home to many young aspirants dreaming to represent the country by playing cricket for the national side. This has been the case in India for so many years. When a differential factor comes in, it is natural for more eyeballs to see a person in a sort of high stature.
The same is happening with tearaway pacer Umran Malik. He was a superb find for the Sunrisers franchise in 2021 where he impressed one and all with his raw pace in three matches. Then, under the tutelage of Dale Steyn, he played in the 2022 season and picked up 22 wickets in 14 matches.
Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar’s remark on Malik has raised a lot of eyebrows.
When asked about a cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar who excites him the most, he picked Malik which was very surprising considering that there had been a lot of cricketers who came in after Sachin Tendulkar and acquired legendary status in India. Malik, on the other hand, has not had a lot of experience except playing in the Indian T20 League.
Malik’s big trump card has been the ability to surprise batters with his pace and he bowls with speeds of 150 kmph which can make any batter uncomfortable.
“One player I am most excited to see playing for India after Sachin Tendulkar is Umran Malik,” He said on a show on the Sony Sports network. This comment has triggered a storm on social media.
Gavaskar's remark didn't go down well with the fans, who are big followers of Sachin Tendulkar and other players such as MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, who have served Indian cricket for a long period.
Umran Malik has been a sensation but whether he can survive the long rope in international cricket remains to be seen.
