Australia took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against England after beating them by 6 wickets on Thursday. Defending a 288-run target in the first ODI against Australia on a good batting surface in Adelaide on Thursday, England needed to pick early wickets. However, the opening pair of Travis Head and David Warner ensured that Australia didn’t lose any wicket in the first 19 overs of the innings.

The duo stitched a 147-run partnership and laid a great platform at the top. The big partnership gave Australia the confidence of chasing down the score pretty comfortably. Travis Head made great use of the opportunity to open the innings as he played an outstanding knock of 69 runs in 57 balls.

Chris Jordan accounted for his wicket in the 20th over but England couldn’t put pressure and pick wickets in a cluster. Steve Smith also looked great at the crease as he added 53 runs for the second wicket with David Warner.

At one stage, it looked like Warner and Smith would finish the game pretty early but Willey then had the former with a short ball in the 29th over for the score of 200 on the board. The southpaw amassed 86 runs in 84 balls, a knock which was laced with 10 fours and 1 six. Labuschagne (4) and Carey (21) also got out in short intervals but Steve Smith held fort at the other end.

He went on to play an unbeaten knock of 80 runs in 78 balls and, thereby, guided the team home in 46.5 overs. Earlier, England got off to a really poor start. The first three wickets fell for just 31 runs on the board. Billings (17) and Buttler (29) also got out after short cameos but Dawid Malan kept scoring boundaries at the other end.

He looked in great touch and, singlehandedly, guided the team to a competitive score of 287 runs on the board. Malan scored 134 runs in just 128 balls, including 12 fours and 4 sixes. However, it didn’t prove enough in the end.
