Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh for the second time in the Asia Cup 2023. In the Super 4 stage of the series, the hosts defeated Bangladesh by 21 runs and extended their winning streak to 3 wins in a row in the tournament. The win against Bangladesh would have given a huge boost to Sri Lanka, who are making the best use of their home conditions.

On a slow wicket in R Premadasa stadium in Colombo, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and elected to bowl first. On a slow track, all the batters from Sri Lanka struggled to score runs, except Sadeera Samarawickrama. The 28-year-old scored a fabulous 93(72) on a slow track and made the difference in the match. It seemed as if the batter was batting on a different wicket.

Samarawickrama’s innings included 8 fours and 2 sixes. Evidently, the strike rotation was fantastic from the middle order batter. Others like Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis supported Samarawickrama well. Nissanka scored 40(60) and Mendis scored 50(73). In their 50 overs, Sri Lanka managed to score 257 runs. For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud claimed 3 wickets each.

Collective bowling efforts from Sri Lanka's bowlers

Chasing 258, Bangladesh never looked in the chase. The tigers were 83/4 at one stage. Towhid Hridoy played a good knock at that stage and tried to revive the innings of Bangladesh. As a result, Bangladesh found themselves at 155/4 after 37.1 overs. That was when the second collapse began. From there, Bangladesh was dismissed for 236 runs, making a mess of the run chase.

Bangladesh lost their last 6 wickets for just 81 runs. For Sri Lanka, captain Dasun Shanaka and Dunith Wellalage bowled very well. Shanaka was the pick of the bowlers, who picked 3 wickets and conceded only 28 runs. Wellalage conceded only 26 runs in his spell of 10 overs. Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana claimed 3 wickets each and helped the hosts in their win.
