South Africa and the Netherlands took on each other in a crucial Group 2 encounter of the 20-20 World Cup 2022. A lot was at stake for the South African team as a win here would guarantee a spot in the semi-finals. Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bowl first. With the bat, the Dutch had a great start as the openers Stephan Myburgh and Max ODowd put on a brilliant batting show.
The two scored 58 runs in their partnership, but they did so slowly. Myburgh (37 runs in 30 balls) was the first one to depart in the 9th over. Tom Cooper then joined ODowd in the middle and stepped on the accelerator to speed up the run rate. They were successful in doing so as they took the team score to 97/2 in 12.4 overs before ODowd was dismissed after scoring 29 runs.
Colin Ackermann then entered the game and continued to make quick runs. Despite a few wickets, he held his end to score a few runs. He remained unbeaten at 41 in 26 balls to take his team to a decent total of 158/4 in their allotted 20 overs.
Netherlands upset South Africa
On the other hand, South Africa had a slow start as both their openers departed within the powerplay for a score of just 39 runs. Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma were expected to fare well but could not do so. After that, the Proteas failed to form any meaningful partnership, which put them in a tricky position. Brandon Glover was the wrecker-in-chief with the ball in the middle overs for the Netherlands. He ended with three wickets in his bag.
As for the Proteas, all the in-form batters failed to perform for the team and could not get the chase going. In the end, they were restricted to a team total of just 145/8, handing the dutch a 13-run win. With this win, the Netherlands knocked out South Africa from the semi-finals contention. In addition, India qualified for the next round, and Pakistan and Bangladesh still stand a chance to make it to the next round.
