South Africa has announced the squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup which is scheduled to take place in October-November. In a massive blow for the fans, injured star Rassie van der Dussen is not a part of the 15-member squad. The middle-order batter fractured his left index finger in the recently concluded second Test match against England.
The 33-year-old batter maintains an impressive 36.00 average in 41 T20Is and has been a backbone of Proteas' middle order. Regular skipper Temba Bavuma returns to the squad after recovering from the elbow injury that he suffered against India in June. The in-form all-rounders Wayne Parnell and Triston Stubbs are also part of the strong squad.
South Africa looking strong ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup:
South Africa was impressive in the last edition of the World Cup, with four wins in the group stages. But the Proteas lost against England and failed to reach the semi-final round. South Africa currently ranks fourth in ICC T20I charts and has been excellent in its last T20I series against India, England, and Ireland.
Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks, both of whom rank in the top ten of the ICC T20 Batters chart, will be key batters for South Africa. David Miller's recent form is a worrying sign for them but he has the ability to finish games on his own. Kagiso Rabada leads the pace attack with Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngigi, and Dwaine Pretorius. Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi are the two spin specialist options with Stubbs and Markram as backup options. South Africa has also named Marco Jansen, Bjorn Fortuin, and Andile Phehlukwayo in the reserves.
