The fourth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) is set to commence on July 30, and SkyFair has been announced as the title sponsor of the tournament. Five teams, namely Colombo Strikers, Dambulla Aura, Galle Titans, Jaffna Kings and B-Love Kandy, will participate in the LPL 2023.
Jaffna Kings are the defending champions. It will be held across two venues, which are R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. The tournament will conclude on August 20. The league phase will be held in round-robin format and the top four teams will qualify for the playoffs.
Contrary to the draft system in previous editions, this season featured auctions for the first time. Each team are permitted to have a maximum of six foreign players in their squads. The auction took place on June 14 in Shangri-La Colombo and each franchise was allowed to spend a maximum amount of USD 500,000.
Each franchise has a squad of 20-24 players including mandatory six foreign players and a minimum of 14 domestic players. Sri Lankan left-arm fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka was bought by Jaffna Kings for USD 92,000, becoming the most expensive player of the auction. New Zealand batter Chad Bowes was auctioned for USD 58,000 by Galle Titans, becoming the most expensive overseas signing of the day.
