Young India opener Shubman Gill has missed out on a chance to go top of the ODI rankings. The Indian team has already sealed the series with a win in Indore on Sunday. With the series wrapped up the focus now shifts to the upcoming ODI World Cup.

Shubman Gill scored yet another ton in ODI cricket on Sunday. The youngster has been rested for the final game to be played on Wednesday. This move has denied the 24-year-old the chance to move to the top of the table as far as the ODI rankings are concerned.

Babar Azam is currently leading the charts at the top in the ODI batting rankings. The Pakistani skipper leads the young Indian opener by a small margin as the race for the top spot heats up.

The Indian Cricket Board’s decision to rest Shubman Gill has come to haunt the young batter. Gill had the chance to go top of the table in the ODI batting rankings. The 24-year-old began with 74 in the Mohali ODI before scoring a ton in Indore on Sunday.

Shubman Gill along with Shardul Thakur have been given a rest for the final ODI at Rajkot. With this move, Babar Azam will retain his number 1 ODI ranking going into the ODI World Cup. The Pakistan skipper has 857 points while Shubman Gill has 814 points.

Babar Azam has played 16 ODI matches this year and scored 745 runs. The 28-year-old has hit 2 centuries and 6 half-centuries with an average of 49. Babar Azam began Asia Cup 2023 with a bang scoring 151 against Nepal. This was followed by a poor run of scores as he finally ended up with an aggregate of 207 runs.

Shubman Gill on the other hand has taken ODI cricket by storm this year. The elegant right-hander from Punjab has played 20 matches scoring 1230 runs. The 24-year-old has 5 centuries and five half-centuries.

Gill has an impressive average of 72.35 with a staggering strike rate of 105. The two players will meet during the ODI World Cup when the two teams clash at Ahmedabad on 14th October. GIll has a great batting record at the venue for his IPL franchise Gujarat Titans.
