One of the greatest players of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo made history by breaking the record for the most international goals scored by a male footballer. The Portuguese superstar surpassed the previous record of 109 goals held by Iranian Ali Daei when he scored his 110th goal in September 2021. After a blistering performance against Luxembourg in the 2024 European Championship qualifiers, Ronaldo took his tally to 122 goals in 198 appearances for his country.

The Portugal skipper has scored against 45 different countries in his international career. While his highest goals came against Luxembourg (11) - two in the most recent match - he has 3 each against top teams Spain, France and Belgium. It is noteworthy that Ronaldo has scored more goals in away matches than in home matches.

Meanwhile, ESPN FC has posted the number of goals scored by Ronaldo against each country on their official Twitter account. The list shows that Luxembourg have been the Al Nassr forward's most successful opponent, scoring 11 goals in 11 matches. Lithuania takes the second spot as the 38-year-old has netted seven goals in the three games against them. He has also scored seven goals in seven games against Sweden.

Ronaldo scored twice as Portugal brushed aside Luxembourg

Portugal thrashed Luxembourg 6-0 in the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier game on Sunday night, March 26. Ronaldo was on full swing against his favourite opponent, scoring in the ninth minute to open the account for Portugal. Left-back Nuno Mendes headed a Bruno Fernandes cross down for Ronaldo, who provided a quick left-footed finish to give his side a perfect start.

Joao Felix headed in Bernardo Silva's left-footed cross to give Roberto Martinez's side a second lead in the 15th minute. Silva scored in the 28th minute to extend their lead once again. The number 7 completed his brace in the 31st minute with a brilliant left-footed touch.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was benched in the second half, but the 2016 European champions continued to dominate as they scored two more goals. Substitutes Otávio Edmilson da Silva and Rafael Leao netted in the 77th and 88th minute respectively to make it 6-0 for the Os Navegadores.
