Shakib Al Hasan has been appointed as Bangladesh's ODI captain for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup 2023. Shakib takes over after Tamim Iqbal's resignation on August 3 and also because he was ruled out of the Asia Cup because of a back injury.
Both Shakib Al Hasan and Litton were considered frontrunners to be chosen as the new ODI skipper. He has, however, beaten Litton Das to become the new ODI skipper of the Bangla Tigers. Mehidy Hasan, the allrounder, was also a strong contender for the position.
Shakib to lead in World Cup
Shakib is currently Bangladesh's skipper across all three forms, having begun his third tenure as Test and T20I captain last year. He also captained Bangladesh in 49 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between 2009 and 2011, winning 22 of them.
The 36-year-old duty was on-again, off-again, effectively deputising for the chronically injured Mashrafe Mortaza. He then captained Bangladesh in three more One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in 2015 and 2017, filling in for Mashrafe.
The all-rounder has captained Bangladesh in 19 Tests and 39 Twenty20 Internationals, with the most recent of his 52 ODIs coming in 2017. While leading the team, he has scored 1547 runs in addition to picking up 68 wickets in the 50-over format.
Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan told reporters on Friday, "We have appointed Shakib as the captain for Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squads will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members."
Earlier this week, the BCB had an emergency meeting but did not settle on the captain's name. According to reports, the board wanted to talk with the candidates and get their thoughts on the move. Shakib was considered the race's front-runner, although Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were also in the running.
Shakib was described as an 'easy option' by BCB President Hasan, but his workload is apparently being scrutinised. Tamim will miss the Asia Cup, which begins on August 30, he expects to be ready for the ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on September 21.
